News & Views @ St Mary’s March 2009 Sheffield Charity scoops an ‘Oscar’ at Rotherham Awards Ceremony St Mary’s Conference and Community Centre beat off stiff opposition to win the title of “Best Community Involved Supplier” at the first ever Rotherham Council Supplier Awards Ceremony. St Mary’s was praised for its holistic approach in supplying top quality food to the Council whilst offering employment to local Asian women and taking strong steps to be environmentally friendly. St Mary’s has trained nearly 20 local Asian women to work in their kitchens.“Having work has transformed their lives” explains Sales and Marketing Manager Karen Kiely . “most of the women had never worked before, and it just means everything to them”. The judges also praised St Mary’s efforts to become a green business. All the food is prepared in a kitchen powered by renewable electricity, and their delivery van runs on waste chip fat. “We are so thrilled to have won this award” says Mrs Kiely; “it was like winning an Oscar and is wonderful recognition of the hard work given by our staff. This is what Social Enterprise is all about - recycling money to change peoples’ lives. All our profit is spent on fantastic work in the local community. It’s profit for a purpose”
