The History of St Marys

The history of St Mary's Church and Community Centre is a story of shadows and light, of decay and renewal, of death and resurrection. It began nearly 175 years ago.

Napoleon Bonaparte and Adolf Hitler will be astonished to find themselves on a list of benefactors of St Mary's. In 1818 parliament granted £1 Million to build churches in the growing urban areas to celebrate the defeat of Napoleon at Waterloo three years earlier.
